Why CANstruction?

Can Christmas TreeOne CAN make a difference.

In 2019, the Northumberland Fare Share Food Bank is launching it’s largest food drive & community team building effort to date. A CANstruction® event will take place from Saturday, March 9th to March 15th, 2019 at the Northumberland Mall. An example structure will be on display at Port Hope’s Capitol Theatre starting tomorrow. Employees of Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, who are responsible for Port Hope Area Initiative, have come together to assemble a CAN Christmas tree as part of the Capitol Christmas. Once the display is over, the cans will be donated to the Food Bank.

Executive Director of the Northumberland Fare Share Food Bank, Rick Riley, explained that this is a way to involve more community partners in raising awareness about hunger & food security in Northumberland.

“We wanted something interactive that could spur on conversations as well as raise funds and food donations… CANstruction® was the perfect way to do this.“ said Riley.

Registration is open now until January 31st, 2019. Interested teams are invited to attend a Team Rally Night on Thursday, January 17th, 2019 at the Dalewood Golf Club. This is a revised date so please mark your calendars!

Entry fee for teams is $250. Local businesses, non-profits, sports teams, church groups, as well as individual teams, are all welcome to participate and showcase their talents. Some of the prizes awarded to the teams include: Best Use of Labels, Structural Ingenuity, Judges Favourite, Most Cans, Junior Outstanding Structure & People’s Choice.

The structures will be on display over March Break at the Mall and the public is invited to view and vote on their favourite.

What Is CANstruction®?

CANstruction® is a large-scale food drive where local teams compete to build structures entirely out of cans. This event is a fun way to encourage team building and creativity all while competing with other teams and giving back to your community.

CANstruction® is a non-profit 501(c)3 charity which hosts competitions and events creating awe-inspiring, gigantic structures made entirely out of full cans of food. Teams of volunteers, which include design industry professionals, participate in CANstruction® events in 150+ cities around the world each year. Afterwards, all food is donated to local food banks. Since 1992, CANstruction® has raised over 72 million pounds of food for hunger relief organizations around the world with its signature, trademarked CANArt®.

Frequently Asked Questions

Maximum size of the official team that actually builds the structure is eight (8) persons. Only 5 team members will be permitted to build at one time.
  • Can we use props?
Props are strongly discouraged.  Jurors prefer pure food structures.
